Once a sleepy fishing harbour, this small town is now a tourist idyll along the picturesque Italian Riviera. Relaxing and people watching are the two biggest pass times here, as during the summer the port becomes a hub of yachting activity and the harbour simply pulses with life.
For those more active there are popular diving sites nearby and, of course, you can have a go at sailing yourself. Or for those more historically minded there are several museums, castles and churches close by that are well worth exploring. And Castello Brown, dating back to the 16th Century, offers one of the best views of Portofino from its once protective battlements. But if you like to be in the thick of it, take a pew at the harbour and be a part of the summertime buzz.
“We simply can’t decide which is better, a glass of Prosecco on the beautiful harbour front or up on the panoramic hill top. Try them both and let us know which one you prefer.”

When to visit
Even in winter temperatures rarely dip below freezing. March to June and September to October are very pleasant temperatures in which to visit. July and August are the warmest months, but kept fresh by onshore breezes. How to get there British Airways flies daily to Genoa from Gatwick, with low cost airlines offer alternative timings. Transfers to Portofino take just over an hour.
There are so many reasons to stay in Portofino on the Ligurian coast and the Hotel Splendido, on a luxuriant hillside overlooking the yachts and islands in the harbour, is not least among them.
Sister hotel to the Hotel Splendido, the Splendido Mare has a perfect position in the very centre of Portofino and looks onto the small, pretty square and the delightful, famed harbour. Most of the beautifully airy 16 suites and rooms have balconies or a terrace giving perfect views of sea and pretty lanes along which a host of the literati and glitterati have meandered.
