Amangalla

Amangalla

Discover Sri Lanka’s elegant colonial past at Amangalla. This enchanting resort is set within the historic walls of the 400-year old Galle Fort on the Galle peninsula. Close to the southern tip of the island, it’s a two hour drive away from Colombo airport. Alternatively, Koggala airport is nearby, or you could make use of the local heliport.

An elegant retreat

Amangalla is the epitome in elegance. Built in the 17th century, the building once housed the New Oriental Hotel in the days of steamship travel. It has now been carefully restored into a cool, airy and elegant resort. Mahogany panelling and antiques incorporated into the décor give the resort an opulent feel.

Enjoy a stroll through the 200-year-old gardens, and then onto the ramparts to explore the fort. Join the daily Passeggiata along the ramparts at sunset with other hotel guests.

A taste of Sri Lanka

For a taste of Sri Lankan life, visit nearby Ambalangoda, the centre of Sri Lanka’s wooden mask-making industry, where skills have been handed down through the generations.

A holiday in Sri Lanka is not complete without a visit to a tea plantation. Rows of emerald bushes give us our favourite drink. Visit the old workings of a local tea factory and take tea and cake on the veranda alongside the Planters Bungalow.

Ayurvedic spa

Ayurveda is a practice that aims to cleanse the body and balance the three energies circulating within it, known as doshas. The spa at Amangalla, The Baths, has an Ayurvedic doctor who can give you personalised food and treatment choices for your stay. The opulent hydrotherapy chambers include a sauna, cold plunge pool and steam room. Outside, there’s a 25-metre pool in an enclosed courtyard. A visit to The Baths is sure to be a blissful experience.
