Caiman Ecological Refuge

Caiman Ecological Refuge

Combining ecotourism, cattle breeding and the unique opportunity to get hands on with jaguar conservation, Caiman Ecological Refuge may be an intimate, private destination catering for a small number of visitors, but it offers big adventures too.

Phenomenal wildlife variety

Pantanal is a remarkable area in geographic terms; very flat, with intensely wet summers creating a hugely diverse and lush landscape. This UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve is home to the largest concentration of wildlife in the Americas. Boasting 400 species of fish, 80 species of mammal and a mind boggling 650 species of bird, and with a high number of these animals under threat of extinction, visiting Caiman Ecological Refuge's 53,000 hectare estate puts you front and centre of the incredible conservation work undertaken here.

Cosy rooms and suites

Occupying three distinctly different natural settings, the main Caiman Lodge, Cordilheira Lodge and Baiazinha Lodge each offer a lovely, comfortable environment. A super decked swimming pool, spacious, cosy interiors and delicious cuisine in the restaurant create a peaceful haven amidst incredible scenery. Charming rooms and suites are spacious, air-conditioned, decorated in soothing tones and offer magnificent views, ensuring you can make the most of your relaxation time.

Exceptional guides

Two daylight activities and one in the evening are offered each day and are led by an exceptional team of experts, all bilingual in Portuguese and English, and all-natural science graduates. Familiarise yourself with this enchanting place on a photographic jeep safari, a walking tour, canoe ride or a night safari. Be astonished by the vastness of the night sky on a Stargazing Workshop. Spend a day learning about this elusive and beautiful animal with the Onçafari Jaguar Project or get involved with the Hyacinth Macaw project.

Immerse yourself in the natural world at its most awe inspiring at Caiman Ecological Refuge.

When to travel
Brazil is a huge country meaning climate varies a lot from region to region, but in general you can visit Brazil all year round, with some considerations. As a general rule, weather is better during our winter, with the beach areas generally being a bit rainier and cooler in June and July. This is in contrast to the Pantanal, when June through to October is drier and is the best time for wildlife spotting.
How to get there
British Airways operate a daily direct route to Sao Paulo, as well as a daily direct flight to Rio during our Summer. Flight time to Sao Paulo is around 12 hours and to Rio around 12 ½ hours.
