The entire city of Kato Paphos, which has been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is well worth a visit. Start the day by admiring the amazingly preserved Roman mosaics in the House of Dionysus and the village of Akaki, finishing off with a trip to see the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite in Palaepaphos.

Nature-lovers will be enchanted by the sprawling Troodos mountain range, with its breathtaking views and crystal-clear waterfalls. This undulating terrain is home to Mt Olympus, which at 1,952 metres towers over the surrounding landscape and offers stunning views over the valleys and plains below. This area is perfect for hiking and cycling during the summer. It’s also a great spot for some birdwatching. Cyprus has around 200 different species of birds during the migration seasons.

A little further inland, you’ll find extensive pine forests and rolling vineyards just waiting to be explored, or you can head to Lara Bay in Akamas Peninsula for a chance to see the rare green or loggerhead turtle.

Cyprus is also known for its enticing cuisine. Feast on everything from delicious hummus and satisfying haloumi to rich, hearty dishes such as afelia, which is pork cooked in red wine. Those with a sweet tooth can tuck into delicate deserts flavoured with rose water and indulge in the sticky pastry dish of baklava. The influences of Greek, Turkish and Middle Eastern culinary traditions are clear, but Cyprus has its own distinctive cooking style.
