Brimming with delights for visitors to explore
From the ancient temples of Cambodia, to the vibrant markets of Vietnam, to the river valleys and coconut palms of Laos, the Indochina region is brimming with delights for visitors to explore.
Whether you want to immerse yourself in bustling cities, relax on the beach or experience a slice of traditional rural life, you won’t be disappointed.
Nestled between Vietnam and Thailand, Cambodia is known for its natural wonders, welcoming people and archaeological marvels. Take a trip to the temples of Angkor near to the town of Siem Reap in the north-west of the country to step back in time. This collection of ancient monuments includes the magisterial Bayon and the famous Angkor Wat, which is sometimes described as the ‘heart and soul of Cambodia’. The Mekong river is another must-see. This impressive waterway is best explored on a cruise, which gives you a chance to see the plethora of fish, birds and reptiles that call it home. You’ll also spot the floating villages that punctuate the river. For more nature, make your way to the island of Koh Rong, where you can see the bioluminescent plankton that causes the water to light up after darkness.
Vietnam also boasts an array of unique experiences and spectacular sights. For excellent shopping, superb dining and lively bars, make your way to Ho Chi Minh. The country’s largest city, it is located on the banks of the Saigon River and is home to attractions including the Jade Emperor Pagoda temple, War Remnants Museum and beautiful botanical gardens. The capital Hanoi has a more traditional look and feel with its colonial architecture. Check out its towering citadel of Co Loa, and take a street food tour in its buzzing markets. For something more energetic, get stuck into some trekking in the north of the country, where dense forests and mountains are waiting to be explored. The resort of Nha Trang on the southern coast is ideal if you want to test your skills at watersports such as snorkelling, kayaking and scuba diving, while the quieter Mui Ne offers tranquil beaches and rolling red and white sand dunes.
With its old-fashioned, slow-paced charm, Laos provides a holiday experience unlike any other. Rugged mountains soar skywards in the east and north of the country, while coconut palms sway in the lush lowland river valleys. Take a slow boat along the Mekong, which is the lifeblood of this landlocked country. See the spectacular waterfalls and verdant forest of the Bolaven Plateau, and visit the city of Luang Prabang with its enchanting temples. You could spend weeks in this fascinating country and still have only scratched the surface.
