Okonjima Lodge is a luxurious family-run property that is located below the Omboroko Mountains in Namibia. This exclusive and remote setting allows visitors to experience the African wilderness in all its glory, while Okonjima Nature Reserve is renowned for providing guests with sightings of leopards and cheetahs. Indeed, the AfriCat Foundation, who undertake important conservation work to protect Namibia’s native big cats, are highly active in this region.
Wilderness camping to suite luxury
There is a selection of accommodation on offer to guests at Okonjima Lodge, from superbly-appointed private camps to luxury safari lodges. At the top end of the scale are the Private Bush Suite and Okonjima African Villa, which provide visitors with their own chef as well as a dedicated safari vehicle and guide. At entry level are the Okonjima Omboroko Campsites, which allow residents to be at one with nature while staying at one of the four sites. The four partially equipped campsites share a swimming pool, and all have viewing points for making the most of those uniquely Namibian views. There is also the Okonjima Luxury Bush Camp, made up of African huts as well as safari tents and one suite, while the Okonjima Plains Camp comprises a range of hotel-style rooms.
Tracking big cats and birdwatching
Okonjima Nature Reserve is spread over a site of around 200 square kilometres. Within this are rocky outcrops, vast plains and dense thickets, the latter of which is the frequent haunt of the beautiful leopard. The reserve has been researching these big cats, their habitat and behaviour for over 30 years, with a view to their future protection. Activities at Okonjima centre around tracking these big cats, as well as other native species, via bush walks and game drives. Birdwatching is also a popular pastime, as is delving deeper into the details of the conservation and research projects that are currently underway.
